company perks: even the odd ones count

Gretchen

Attracting top software engineering talent is a competitive game, and to have an edge these days, you’ve got to stand out … great health benefits, free food, an active social community … the list goes on.

But when it comes to perks, here’s one I bet you haven’t heard much about:  feminine hygiene products.  That’s right; I went there.

The fact is that a few of the most competitive software companies - Yahoo!, IBM, Apple, and Microsoft to name a few -  offer these products as a “perk” to their female employees. And while you will likely never see the phrase “All the feminine hygiene products you can use” on an employer’s corporate career site, these types of perks do resonate with employees.

Don’t believe the impact?  Just check out some of the comments on this thread:  'free tampon' - yahoo! women's room.  All I can say is that these companies better think twice if they decide to cut this perk. The Great Microsoft Towel Revolt of 2004 will pale in comparison. :)

Makes you wonder though … what other interesting and odd perks are out there that companies never publicize?  Do you know of any others?

This perk is odd only because of its comprehensiveness.  Boeing totally underpublicizes this perk... but it is definitely #1 for me.
Boeing pays for 100% of my tuition.  Including books (well, $150 per class for books).  This is for any type of schooling.  Law School.  MBA.  Undergrad.  Bartending.  Whatever.  Its pretty freaking sweet.

"The Great Microsoft Towel Revolt" wouldn't be limited to the gym, at least in the UK. As I recall, over there, "sanitary towel" is what they use for "feminine napkin."
As for the perk itself -- I must say, it's definitely come in handy. The company I work for has this perk, and I've found myself taking advantage of it on a few occasions. Definitely better than having to hunt for a female co-worker (which can be rare in a male-dominated group like Development or Test) and ask in hushed tones if they can help you out.

Other underpublicized perks: movie days. A couple times a quarter, on Fridays, my company takes the Engineering group out to an action movie, and springs for popcorn and soda. That usually takes up most of an afternoon and can be quite welcome during a heavy release cycle.

Adam - Wow.  that's really cool.  I know a lot of companies will cover "job-related" education - but any kind of schooling is really sweet!  By the way, good to see you over here on JobSyntax!! :)

Jenny - LOL.  Yes, the Towel Revolt would be doubly bad!!

TMI. Although I'm happy for the female employees that benefit, I just don't know that I'm comfortable with the discussion. :-P
