things that make you go "hmmm" – part 2!

Gretchen

A few months ago over at JobsBlog, I wrote about a job description for a Blog Recruiter with Volt Services in Redmond.  It seems Volt has now filled their $12 / hour job, and they’ve been off and blogging for a couple months.

In a recent post, Dale, the "Volt Insider", conveys a story from a “large Redmond software company” and tells you what NOT to do to get hired.

Um, this story is odd from so many angles … and not just the candidate's.  Don't even get me started.  :)   But Dale ends with this apt warning:

I urge all of my readers to be careful.  There is a lot of “advice” on the internet these days from self-proclaimed job search professionals which would have you doing or saying things that can be easily taken the wrong way when applied incorrectly.

ManBearPig courtesy of Comedy CentralSo that’s right, kiddies.  When a self-proclaimed job search professional like me tells you to call a Microsoft Hiring Manager a “mother******”, please don’t.  Just don’t do it.

I'm super, duper serial.  EXCELSIOR!!!

After reading Volt's post, I guess I'm not entirely sure what sort of advice they were talking about.  "Don't act like a nightmare candidate" would have taken one sentence and wouldn't have required them posting a bunch of E-mails from various companies (which I would find questionable anyway depending on whether they received permission to publish those).  I figure anyone who *can't* figure out not to swear at the person who is interviewing them has *far* bigger problems to worry about than job advice. ;)

Job Syntax is killer sweet.

That post of his was poorly thought out.  It's why the world needs blog consultants.

For some reason, I read that guy's post and thought I heard cheesy 1950's "health film" music in the background...

"Hey, there's Sam on his way to a Job Interview! (Sam waves to camera) Notice how Sam gives a firm, yet friendly handshake to the hiring manager. You'd never guess that Sam was on his way to....(scary music)...Hiring Ineligibility."

In terms of blogging style, I'd take the "self proclaimed job search professional" over his any day. Dude could definitely learn something from you guys.

I think Gretchen caught the flavor of what was intended...humor was the primary directive here.

In any case, thanks for the input and for reading my post. As you all keyed in on, I am a recruiter-turned-blogger and am trying to figure all of this out while continuing to fulfill my recruiting responsibilities. I'm still on my training wheels and any feedback from the community is greatly appreciated.

And just for the record, I am getting paid a bit more than the 12 bucks so stop making fun of me for that! =)
