working with the blood sucking industry's vacuous sub-human scum

Gretchen

I stumbled across this old thread over on the “old” Joel on Software Forums: Getting around the technical recruiter. Some decent advice if you can get past the hatred. ;-)

Now, as you know, I don’t think recruiters are all bad, and I definitely don’t think we are “vacuous sub-human” … “scum” in a “blood sucking industry” (wow, angry much?) – but if you’ve followed the JobSyntax blog for long, you do know that I think the most successful jobseekers are the ones who don’t rely on recruiters to make magic happen.

How do you get around … I mean, “enhance” … the efforts of technical recruiters?  Any tips?

I don't have recruiter anger issues, but I have found myself wondering what the heck they were thinking when they sent those recent candidates our way.  I'm not going to name names, but I haven't been at all happy with the folks I've been interviewing. It's pretty obvious that the recruiters I've been dealing with don't do any kind of technical screening. I suppose that's to be expected, though.

Any suggestions on how/where to find good recruiters? Or how to find the ones that job candidates with the skill sets we're looking for would go through?

Hi Drew - I think it's less about how to find good recruiters and more about how to partner with and train a good recruiter.  The more closely you work with your recruiter, usually the better results you'll find.  Let the recruiter shadow you and your team to better understand what you do.  Share your team's resumes with the recruiter as a "template" for what you seek.  Source resumes with your recruiter so he or she can better understand what you like on a resume ... and don't like.  Even have your recruiter send you a weekly status report to force some accountability.  Or, if all else fails, hire us to write your recruiting plan and train your recruiter. ;-)
