getting behind interview questions: manhole covers

Zoe

Why are manhole covers round?  I heard this a lot when I first started at Microsoft, less and less as the years went by, but never really cared to know the true answer.  Now, via digg, there's a whole (ha!) explanation on wikipedia of origins as an interview question and the "answer".

What's even more interesting is the conversation generated in the comments of the digg post.  From criticisms of Microsoft to theories on why manhole covers are actually round; 235 of them in fact.

Just goes to show that there are a whole lotta ways to approach and answer these types of questions.  You should check it out.

In Nashua NH the manhole covers are triangles. You can image the theories. :-)

I read that in the wikipedia entry.  I think they are doing it to be obtuse :)

Nowadays it's so cool a question, I'd say it's a good opener.

IMHO, somebody that hasn't heard it yet, or can not come up with a smart answer, doesn't care enough to be a good candidate.

Personally, I love: "'cause the hole's round." It's a great example of a completely off, yet correct answer you never wanted to get.

Henry - interesting perspective.  Do you say that because it is a legendary question in technical interviewing and anyone prepping should have heard about it?

I do agree that it's a good ice breaker though and something that can imbue a little humor in the process.
