Job Boards - the good, the bad, and the ugly

Let's gab about job boards.  Have you had much luck - either as a jobseeker or employer - with any particular boards?  This conversation references my blog post on job boards

My 2cents ... I don't find them particularly useful as a technical recruiter - but if I did have to go out to the boards, I would post jobs on Dice or Craigslist.  You?

I do think niche, or even "micro-niche," is the way to go. Whether they be professional networks, newsletters, or job boards. But since I publish a niche board for quantitative finance professionals (www.quantster.com) I have a bias. That's my "2cents." - JV.

Ha, ha.  Nothing wrong with having a bias! That's a great point about seeking out other niche mediums just besides boards.

Gotta mostly agree that the job boards are a time suck.  However, I've gotten more juice from sifting the resume databases than actually posting these days.  The positions I usually recruit for tend to have some pretty specific requirements, though, so that probably has a big effect on getting relevant responses.  My recent experiences posting on Monster (impressions of Monster in my blog), HotJobs, and DICE have have left me less than impressed.

Job seekers seem to be thoroughly disenchanted with the boards, because of all the automated responses and lack of 'touch.'  My opinion?  The more social networking-oriented tools like blogs and sites like LinkedIn are going to dominate.  The question for me is is, 'Will the boards evolve or die?'

While I do not use Job boards often. I do prefer sites like LinkedIn to sites like Monster. Part of this is that, in theory, you already have some sort of connection with the place you are finding job opportunities listed. I personally find myself going to individual company Websites of interest.
